FISHING ROADIE

SO! Here I am on tour again... I decided this time to bring my fishing gear out with me and to try as many different spots as possible. I thought I would document each spots for any other guys out there touring that are into fishing!

If you are on tour now, just use the "find" function of your browser and type in the city or venue name to check if I fished where you are...

September 20th 2013: San Diego, California

Venue: Humphreys by the bay.

I discovered there an amazing spot, 20 feet away from the stage. You can fish right there where the marina is. One of the local guys gave me some squid as bait. I jumped into the runner van who took me to anglers choice. a nice little store close by where I bought a new rod to be able to tackle some bigger fish. I got a complete kit for 50$. So at night during the show, I threw some squid in the water with a split shot on the line to send it to the bottom. I left to the tour bus to get a jacket and when I came back, there was a nice little spotted bay bass on the line! right after that I sent the line back to the bottom and waited for the tip of the rod to move.... It sure did, I engaged in a good fight, the kind of fight I did not expected at all. and guess what, I caught my first Leopard Shark ever.

September 22nd 2013: Monterey, California

Venue: Monterey Jazz Festival

If you go to Monterey, you can go to a wharf. these piers a easy to access and you can fish without a license as long as you stay on the pier. Well that's the case for every fishing pier in the state of California. I spent a few hours there giving it a try. Same technique, squid all the way down.... the only thing we caught that day is some tiny octopus.

September 23rd 2013: Salt Lake City, Utah

Day Off

I went to the Jordan river witch I believe is in the west part of Salt Lake. I grabbed a bike at the hotel and made my way there around dinner time. The Jordan river is quite a small stream in this part of the city and doesn't seem too clean either. Anyway, I've seen some other guys fishing for catfish.  I did not catch anything there.

September 25th 2013: Colorado Springs, Colorado

Venue: Pikes Peak Center

There is a small stream 5 minutes from the venue called monument creek. nice little stream that apparently contains some small brown trout. Unfortunately when I was there the water was really muddled due to the flood that happened not too long before. I didn't catch anything that day but I will definitely give it another try if I go there again. Below is a short video I took with my phone where I think there might be some trout if there is any!

September 26th 2013: St-Louis, MO

Day Off

I first tried a lake in Forest Park witch is stocked with bass. I didn't have luck there but I actually seen some bass. nice little spot. I then made my way to the Mississippi River right by the Arch. The sun was going down by the time I get there. I did not catch anything there either but there was a lot going on in the water. I'm pretty sure they are some serious carps or catfish in there. I'm sure you can catch quite a lot of nice fish there with the proper baits. I probably spent something like 40 minutes there so I didn't have so much time to try different things.

September 28th 2013: East Lansing, Michigan

Venue: Wharton Center at michigan state University

5 minutes away from the venue you can find the red cedar river witch runs across the campus. Nice little river, I guess something like 50 feet wide and not so deep. I noticed that there was a lot of crayfish in the river. I've seen on a website that they stocked the river with steel head trouts last spring but some locals told me I would probably catch pike. I wanted to see if there is any trout in there so I've put a regular 2 1/2 Toronto Wobbler spoon on my line with a 24 inches leader and a nymph fly. After two casts, I noticed that bass was actually trying to eat the spoon and not the fly. I removed the fly and put a hook straight onto the spoon. Next cast I landed a nice little bass. within 45 minutes I caught 1 bass and 3 small pikes! Then I had to head back to the venue to actually work!

September 30th 2013: Schenectady, NY

Day Off

If you stop by Schenectady, the only thing to do is fishing!! There is a nice river running across the north part of the town called the Mohawk River. I spent most of my day by that river casting spoons and jigs. I didn't have any luck that day but I'm pretty sure you can get nice bass in this river. I've seen some nice carps wondering in shallow water on the north shore of the river close to the State street bridge ( probably 10 of them hanging out together). Here is a pdf I found online that speaks about the river and gives you some spots to explore.

Note that there is also a lake in the park right by the Holiday Inn, apparently there is fish in there but I didn't have time to check it out.

October 3rd 2013, Niagara Falls, Ontario

Venue: Fallsview Casino

This has been the best fishing experience on this tour so far and probably ever! If you go to Niagara Falls, you want to head over to the whirlpool downstream of the falls on the Niagara river. I'm telling you, that is quite a hike but it's worth it! The landscape is great, you don't feel like being in a city. I've been lucky enough to get in this town exactly when the salmons are coming back in the river to spawn. I've never fished for salmon before but everything you hear about it is true! I had the beginners luck I guess, I only needed three casts before I hooked this freaking strong Chinook. What a blast! after a good 5 minutes of reeling and keeping tension on the line, I finally landed my first salmon ever! 39 inches / 22 pounds..... Unbelievable!
